What To Do When Your Toddler Says “No!”

Girl child with mother

Your toddler will go through a few stages in life, but perhaps no stage is quite as infamous as the “No!” phase. When your child discovers the power of contradicting whatever you tell them to do, it can seem impossible to get your little one to cooperate with anything at all. However, there are a few things you can do to help ease your child out of this endless loop of refusal. Consider these tips from our child care in Albuquerque.

Provide Options

When your toddler refuses to do what you ask, defuse the situation by providing a few alternatives. Of course, these options can all be variations on the same thing – such as asking your child whether they want to go back inside now or in one minute – but the important thing is to give them the illusion of choice.

Stand Firm

On the other hand, there are times where it’s simply impossible to give your child a choice. If they’re refusing to leave the grocery store, then it’s important to stand your ground and tell them it’s time to go – no negotiating out of this one. Moments like this will help your toddler understand that saying “No” will not always be the best way to handle a situation.

Watch Your Vocabulary

Why does your child say “No” so often? It might be because they simply hear it at home. Watch the words you say around your toddler, because those will be the words that they pick up and later say on their own. With that in mind, try to find new phrases and ways to express your refusal at home without spelling out the big N-O.
