How to Help Your Child Learn Gratitude

There’s a lot to be grateful for in life – but your toddler might not realize that just yet. There’s nothing wrong with your child being a bit selfish early on, but as they grow older, it’s important to ensure that your toddler learns how to be grateful for what they have. With that in mind, here are a few ways to help your child develop gratefulness during their time in child care in Albuquerque.

Encourage Your Child to Say Thank You

The first step toward helping your toddler become more grateful is teaching them the two most basic words of thankfulness: “Thank you.” You can start with leading by example, making a point to say “thank you” often, and encouraging your child to follow your example. Then, be sure to nudge your child to say thanks whenever it would be appropriate.

Show Examples of Generosity

Don’t be afraid to point out examples of generosity. If you see people going above and beyond – even members of your own household – make sure that your toddler sees it and understands what makes it special. If you’re at a store and see someone hold the door open for someone else, for example, make sure that your child sees how generous that action is.

Make Thankfulness Part of the Routine

One popular way of making everyone in the family more grateful is to take some time at the end of every day to reflect on a few things that you were grateful for. Doing so will allow your child to think back on everything that happened that day and express why they’re thankful for it. Turn this activity into a habit, and you’ll make thankfulness part of the daily routine.
